ECONOMY

MANUFACTURING


In 2011, manufacturing provided $18.0 billion to Maryland's gross domestic product, up from $17.7 billion in 2010.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the highest employment was in the computer and electronic products industry (20,906 jobs), the food manufacturing industry (15,818 jobs), and printing and related activities (9,545 jobs). With total value of shipments of manufactured goods in 2011 at $41.8 billion, total annual payroll by Maryland manufacturers was $6.0 billion paid to 103,473 workers.

Maryland manufacturing was led by chemical manufactures ($4.5 billion), computer and electronic product manufactures ($4.2 billion), food, beverage and tobacco manufactures ($2.9 billion), and plastics and rubber manufactures ($0.9 billion).
